A volunteer-led fundraising group aiming to raise money for a new breast care unit in Ystrad Mynach has raised £120,000 in the last 18 months.
The Friends of ABUHB (Aneurin Bevan University Health Board) Breast Unit was set up in 2018 with the aim of raising £200k towards the new unit, which is due to open at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in late 2021.
The group aims to raise funds for the additional facilities the NHS is unable to provide.
The volunteers in the group have all had their lives affected in some way by breast cancer.
The group is supported by ABUHB, meaning it doesn’t face any admin costs and all money raised goes straight towards the breast care unit.
Currently, more than 6,000 patients attend the breast care clinics at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny each year.
Emma Wilkins, fundraising manager for breast services at ABUHB, said: “The group’s support of our appeal has been phenomenal and the community have really rallied behind it.
“This amazing donation will help us to provide a holistic welcoming environment in our new breast centre that will benefit thousands of local people.”
