The old coal tips on Mynydd Machen

An appeal has been launched after a woman was reportedly assaulted and robbed while out walking.

The woman was walking on the Mynydd Machen common as part of her daily exercise, when she was attacked and had her phone stolen.

The assault happened at around 3.15pm on Sunday, March 29.

The woman was taking a photo of three off-road bikers riding illegally, when one of the bikers assaulted her and stole her phone.

The attacker is described as a white male, around 6ft tall and of a medium build.

“We have a long way to go and the challenge for all of us is survival”

He was dressed all in black, wearing a zip-up hoodie, jogging bottoms and trainers, as well as a blue and white helmet.

Inspector Aled George of Gwent Police said: “The victim suffered minor injuries as a result of this and is very shaken by what has happened.

“I’m urging anyone, including other off-road bikers, to come forward if they have any information about the offender.

“Off-road biking is not a legitimate reason for people to be out of their homes at this time. The risk this illegal activity has to other people is significant, we will not tolerate these continued efforts to break the law and will continue to hold operations to target people committing these offences.”

Gwent Police deputy chief constable Amanda Blakeman said: “It is important that people realise, even though we are dealing with an unprecedented health crisis, we are still carrying out our daily business – preventing and tackling crime and arresting and prosecuting offenders. This will not stop.

“Those who seek to take advantage of the situation and prey on the vulnerable will be dealt with.

“The majority of our communities are continuing to co-operate and work with us and I’d like to, once again, thank them for that.

“Rest assured we are doing everything we can to protect our NHS and the safety of our communities.”

Anyone with information can contact Gwent Police on 101, or through direct message on Facebook or Twitter. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
