Businesses in Caerphilly County Borough have voiced concerns that they aren’t being issued enough guidance on whether or not their work is essential.
Businesses deemed non-essential were advised to close following the UK Government’s decision to enforce a lockdown on Monday, March 23.
While essential services such as supermarkets remain open, a number of businesses have told Caerphilly Observer they feel trapped in a “grey area”.
Graham Johnson, owner of PC2 Computers in Bedwas, has closed his computer repair shop but continues to receive work requests from businesses still providing essential services.
Mr Johnson said: “Following the guidance of the government, I closed the shop down immediately and informed customers that I can no longer operate.
“I do however provide work to a number of businesses that are still open, including food shops and funeral directors, and they have contacted me since.
“This situation is a nightmare. I am being left to decide whether I am essential or not, and I feel like I have to decide whether to say no to customers who are in need or put people at risk.”
Many businesses have adapted to the lockdown by tailoring their services, with many cafes and restaurants now offering takeaways and deliveries in a bid to stay open.
Despite the Welsh government announcing a £1.1billion coronavirus support package on Monday, March 30, many small businesses and self-employed people continue to feel guidance doesn’t go far enough.
Hefin David, Assembly Member for Caerphilly, said: “There will be areas which fall outside of government aid and this is frustrating for anyone affected.
“If there is a way that a business can contribute to essential services and are able to adapt and do so safely, then do make use of opportunities. This could mean minimising public contact, cash handling and working from home.
“If there are specific issues that I can help with, I would urge anyone to write to me and I will try my best to offer advice and support, contact the Welsh Government to highlight difficulties or seek information to help.”
