Police have seized several off-road vehicles on Machen Mountain following an operation targeting illegal use in the area.
The operation took place on Sunday, April 5 and was supported by Natural Resources Wales.
The seizure follows reports of walkers and runners being intimidated by individuals illegally riding quad bikes and dirt bikes.
In addition to the seizure of seven vehicles, Gwent Police also issued four notices to motorists who were using vans to bring vehicles onto the mountainside.
Sergeant Andrew Boucher, who commanded the operation, said: “This zero-tolerance operation responded to illegal activity on our mountainsides that not only causes massive environmental damage to our beautiful countryside but affects the lives of those who live there.
“The force is aware that this particular issue has existed for years in these areas, but I want to stress that, at this challenging time, this behaviour is especially inconsiderate when many members of our communities are staying home to protect the NHS and save lives.”
Illegal off-road biking is prohibited throughout the year, but Gwent Police is also reiterating that people follow the government advice to stay at home.
Amanda Blakeman, Deputy Chief Constable of Gwent Police, said: “We understand this is a difficult time for all people. The vast majority of our communities are adhering to the guidance and we are grateful to the real difference they are making.
“Those who carry on defying the government advice may face enforcement action, in line with our powers.”
Welcoming the operation, the council’s leader, Philippa Marsden, told Caerphilly Observer: “I am deeply saddened to hear accounts of walkers and runners feeling intimidated whilst using our local countryside.
“This is particularly upsetting during this period of national emergency, where our countryside is offering the opportunity for both exercise and solace for many residents.”
Cllr Lisa Phipps, who represents the Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen ward, added: “As well as breaking the law and causing a nuisance, those using off road vehicles in our countryside are also putting themselves and others at considerable risk by breaching Government rules on social distancing.
