Flying Start staff are reading books to toddlers over the internet

Toddlers across the borough have been enjoying online story-telling sessions while the country is in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Staff members at the Flying Start programme, which is aimed at children aged three and under, have been recording themselves reading children’s books and sharing them on social media.

The story-tellers add character voices, songs and dance moves into the stories.

Childcare support announced for critical workers

While the children are unable to see the Flying Start staff in person, they still get to see a familiar face while watching the videos.

Stories such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar have been covered by staff, who are now taking story requests.

The scheme, which is funded by Welsh Government, is available to residents living in select catchment areas in the borough.

The programme aims to promote a variety of skills, such as language, social and emotional skills, as well as physical development.

Graig-y-Rhacca mothers hope to inspire confidence with new group

Cllr Barbara Jones, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for education and achievement, said: “Staff have been very resourceful, using technology to continue their story sessions for young children in the county borough.

“Having a fun book read aloud, in such a lively and engaging way, has great educational benefits for young minds. A huge thank you to all of the team.”
