George Floyd died on May 25 in Minneapolis after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck as he struggled to breath

Caerphilly’s Member of Parliament has urged residents to write to Prime Minister Boris Johnson about the death of George Floyd in the United States.

Wayne David MP has called on the Prime Minister to speak to US President Donald Trump and condemn the incident.

Mr Floyd died in Minneapolis on Monday, May 25 at the hands of a police officer, who knelt on his neck as he pleaded for breath.

The incident has sparked a wave of protesting across the Atlantic and here in the UK, with an anti-racism protest set to be held in Caerphilly on Saturday (June 6).

The Labour MP said it was important for as many people as possible to show solidarity with black people in America, and said writing to the Prime Minister is the most effective way of doing so.

Mr David said: “The death of George Floyd has shocked the world. I urge as many people as possible to send an email to Boris Johnson at Number 10 Downing Street.

“I would suggest that people should tell Boris Johnson to pick up the phone to President Trump and tell him that racism in the American police force needed to be rooted-out and that President Trump himself should stop making inflammatory remarks.

“There is only one race – the human race.  That is the message which I hope will come from the people of Caerphilly.”
