Gerwyn Price has suffered a shock defeat in the World Matchplay

Gerwyn Price fell to a shock 10-7 first round defeat against Danny Noppert in the World Matchplay on Monday night (July 20).

World number three Price struggled from the start as Dutchman Noppert condemned him to his fourth successive round one defeat at the summer’s biggest tournament.

Noppert landed five 180s as he booked his place in the second round of the competition, which is being held in Milton Keynes.

Dutchman Danny Noppert caused an upset by knocking Gerwyn Price out of the competition

The defeat comes after Price was beaten 8-2 by world number two Peter Wright in the final of the PDC Summer Series Day Five on July 12.

Following the defeat to Noppert, who is ranked 24th in the PDC Order of Merit, Price tweeted: “Sorry guys wasn’t my night last night just couldn’t get going.

“Full credit to Danny – all the best for the rest of the tournament.

“Thanks again everyone for the continued support.”
