Arrests made after man assaulted and dog stolen

A 27-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, both from Risca, have been arrested on suspicion of assault, stealing a dog and producing cannabis.

The arrests were made after an assault, which happened on Herbert Avenue, Pontymister, at around 10.20pm on Friday, August 14.

A 41-year-old man sustained a cut to the neck and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

He suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, and was later discharged from hospital.

The arrests were made on Tuesday (August 18), with Gwent Police investigating the incidents.

Two men from Newport, aged 32 and 36 respectively, were also arrested.

The 32-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft, while the 36-year-old was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man from Risca was arrested on suspicion of assault on Saturday, August 15, but has been released on bail.

Detective Inspector Jamie Cooper, of Gwent Police, said: “Enquiries into this assault are ongoing and I am appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to come forward.

“In particular, we are appealing for anyone who may have seen the dog pictured to get in contact with us. The dog is a Staffordshire bull terrier/lurcher cross and was stolen during the assault.”
