Gerwyn Price celebrates during his World Grand Prix clash with Jermaine Wattimena

Markham’s Gerwyn Price has reached the second round of the World Grand Prix darts with a straight-sets win over Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena.

Price, 35, recovered from 2-0 down to win the first set 3-2 on Wednesday night (October 7), before sealing his place in the next round with a second 3-2 win.

It means world number three Price, known as ‘The Iceman’, has gone a step further in the competition than he did last year, where he was knocked out in the first round.

Price said: “I’m pleased to be through, but I didn’t play my best.

“I couldn’t get off. If you give me one dart at a double at the end of a leg then I seem to take it, but I’m useless with three in my hand.

“I’ve got to improve that in the next round. I put myself under a lot of pressure because you need to get off and you need to finish, but I scored ok when I did get going.”

Price will take on Kim Huybrechts, from Belgium, in the second round of the competition, which is being held in Coventry.

Price will take on Huybrechts at 7pm on Friday (October 9), with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
