Quick-thinking nursery staff jumped into action after the road leading to their base flooded – leaving parents unable to get their children.
Heavy rainfall on Wednesday, December 23, saw many roads affected by floods – including Caerphilly’s Van Road.
The flood, near the roundabout with the Lansbury Park link road, meant cars were unable to get through to Caerphilly Business Park – where Britannia Day Nursery is based.
Parent Sara Powell-Davies had a phone call from her husband Peter yesterday evening explaining he was unable to get through to collect their one-yea-old son Cadel.

Sara then contacted the nursery and was told their “emergency plan” was in action. One of the staff members had a Land Rover and used it to drive through the flood water. Several trips were made ferrying children to anxious parents.
Sara contacted Caerphilly Observer to thank staff at Britannia Day Nursery for their ingenuity.
She told us: “They went above and beyond from what we expected of them.”
The road had previously flooded in September last year.
More rain to come as Storm Bella approaches
The Met Office has issued a Yellow warning for rain and an Amber warning for winds, up to 70mph, for Boxing Day in south Wales as Storm Bella approaches.
Its website reads: “After a relativity calm and cold day on Christmas Day, conditions across the UK will turn increasingly unsettled through Saturday December 26 and into the December 27 with strengthening winds and heavy rain moving in from the north.”
Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wardle, said: “Conditions will turn very unsettled after Christmas day, with a large area of low pressure sweeping across the UK from Boxing Day. Very strong winds will impact much of England and Wales, with particularly strong gusts on south west facing coasts.
“Heavy rain will also move in from the north, with heavy downpours through the afternoon in Scotland and Northern Ireland moving south across England and Wales overnight. This will be a notable change from the calmer conditions over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so take extra care and stay up to date with the latest forecast.”
