Police told lorry drivers illegally using road as ‘cut through’

Lorries and other large vehicles are flouting traffic rules banning them from the B4591 in Rogerstone and northern Newport, a city councillor has claimed.

Cllr Chris Reeks, who represents Rogerstone North, said the B4591 had a 7.5-tonne weight limit, but “we are regularly seeing lorries and articulated vehicles in excess of that limit using the road as a cut-through down to the Wern Estate or A467 dual carriageway”.

Speaking at a council meeting on Tuesday, he said the issue “brings distress to homeowners who live along the route, as well as increasing the stress on the road surface itself”.

“Is there any way an operation can be undertaken in the late afternoon or early evenings to monitor and target these lorry drivers, and deter them from using this road as a cut-through?” he asked Gwent Police superintendent Jason White.

Supt White said he would arrange “to see if we can get some monitoring done for the area”.
