Traffic calming measures could be installed at five locations across Newport.

The city council has chosen the sites from a list of more than 60 put forward by ward members as “areas of concern”.

In the Allt-yr-Yn ward, vehicle-activated electronic speed limit reminder signs will be set up at Glasllwch Lane and Western Avenue, following concerns from a local councillor “regarding a high level of non-compliance with the 20mph speed limit”.

An existing pedestrian crossing along Aberthaw Road, in the Alway ward, is set to be moved, with dropped kerbs and tactile paving installed.

A local councillor had raised concerns about the safety of the existing crossing, which is used by the crossing patrol for Alway Primary School.

In the Beechwood ward, new “speed management measures” for Christchurch Road, Firbank Avenue and Hove Avenue will include raised zebra crossings, road humps and changes to junctions.

Two electronic speed limit reminders will also be installed in Firbank Avenue.

In the Llanwern ward, following “multiple” requests, new signs will warn drivers about the potential for horses along Broadstreet Common.

These will be located where there are concentrated numbers of livery yards and where horses are regularly ridden in groups.

And in the Malpas ward, waiting restrictions will be brought in at “multiple junctions” in Claremont and Pilton Vale.

This follows concerns from residents and local councillors around vehicles being parked on verges.

“Whilst, for the most part, this does not create road safety issues, where this occurs in the vicinity of junctions, this can often impact on visibility and can be mitigated through the introduction of restrictions,” the council said in a report.

It is hoped the works will be funded by a £300,000 Welsh Government road safety capital grant.

The council report notes the works in the Beechwood and Malpas wards are unlikely to be completed within the next financial year.

A cabinet member is expected to approve the works later this month.
