Ask The Legal Expert with JCP Solicitors: Purpose-Built Unit Aims to Improve Outcomes For People With Spinal Cord Injury

Nick O’Neill, Associate Solicitor in the Injury Services team at JCP Solicitors.

Here in the Injury Services team at JCP Solicitors we are pleased to see the recent opening of a new state-of-the-art spinal injuries unit at the University Hospital Llandough. This completes the transfer of these essential services from Rookwood Hospital, Cardiff. The new purpose built facility provides critical spinal and neuro specialised rehabilitation services and will give patients the best possible chances of recovery, with a hydrotherapy pool, gymnasium and outpatient services. The service will also benefit from out-of-hours medical support being co-located with radiology services on site. The wards have been designed around patient experience and modern healthcare requirements. The beds are more spaced out and there are more cubicles on offer.

While the opening of the new unit is fantastic news it does, however, flag up the lack of any similar facility in West Wales and we hope this can change. With an estimated 50,000 people in the UK living with spinal cord injuries and around 2,500 people newly injured every year, these facilities are becoming more important. In the course of our work we see many clients who have sustained spinal cord injuries, often because of medical negligence or via a road traffic accident, a fall, or a serious incident at home or in the workplace. Often these clients have complex care and rehabilitation needs and as such the services like the ones provided at the University Hospital Llandough are vital.

We are pleased to be a business member of Spinal Injuries Association. JCP Solicitors has worked with the SIA for many years and we have seen firsthand the very important work they do to support people with spinal cord injuries to live fulfilled lives.
