Advertising feature: Financial decisions can be a mine field. Full of challenging questions. When is the right time to invest? Are my family protected? Will my state pension be sufficient? A lot to consider.

My new monthly feature offers practical guidance, whilst sharing financial updates in simple terms. Now more than ever, people need to re-evaluate their financial position. Consider if existing arrangements still meet needs and plan for future goals.

I am Sherald Waterhouse-Trew, Principal of SWT Wealth Management based in Caerphilly. I have been a financial adviser for 20 years so have seen first-hand positive and negative market and economic conditions. This experience has provided me with a wealth of knowledge. My aim is simple – to guide people through their financial decisions highlighting areas to consider.

So, what is “wealth management”? Well, you certainly do not need millions to invest. A common misconception I am keen to dispel. I consider myself as a financial planner. Supporting people through their life stages and identifying their end goal. This may be retiring early, providing children with house deposits, or paying off early their own mortgage. The list is endless.

It is sometimes said financial advisers make you money but lose it for you too. Experience tells me listening to “Joe Blogs” in the pub and not sticking to a plan, is far more likely to do this. Firstly, find an adviser you trust. Someone knowledgeable, who does not baffle you. Someone with a genuine interest in you, your family, or your business. Then, the key is creating that financial plan together. Regularly reviewing and adapting it. This is what wealth management is all about.

Each month, I will focus on key areas of financial planning. My next feature is all about protecting your biggest asset – you.
