Machen Cricket Club are looking to raise the profile of women’s cricket

Machen Cricket Club have set up a women’s softball team in a bid to grow the sport in the borough.

Player for the men’s side, Rhydian Knox, explained how after running a few trial events several weeks ago, participation has increased from eight members to 21.

He said: “The team is being run by our new chairman David Knox and it’s really to give something back to the girls who come and support us home and away every Saturday.

“It’s a sport that doesn’t get a lot of attention so we really want to get the message out there and encourage more women in the area to come along.”

The club will be hosting a softball tournament in August with eight clubs set to get involved.

Knox added: “The feedback we’ve had so far is that everyone wishes we’d set it up sooner. They’re all loving the fun and social element of the sessions and we’re looking forward to hosting the tournament.”
