Wales Women over-60s celebrated second place at the indoor hockey world cup

At their first indoor hockey world cup, Wales Women’s over-60s squad managed to secure a silver medal after narrowly missing out to Germany in the final.

The indoor tournament, which was held in Nottingham over Easter weekend, was the first Wales Women’s hockey has entered since the masters section was formed in 2006.

Beverly Rogers has qualified for the Welsh squad every year since 2006, and told Caerphilly Observer how this was the first time she and most of the squad had ever landed a medal.

The 63-year-old said: “It’s tough to get into. You have to go to three separate trials before qualifying, then there are regular training camps.

“It was the first year that we entered the indoor tournament and we managed to come away with a medal, which I was personally chuffed about as it was my first.

“I also managed to score a goal against the USA so that was pleasing too.”

Rogers is also the ladies captain at Caerphilly Golf Club, and explained how sports is helping her keep fit: “It’s pretty non-stop honestly. I play for my club down in Penarth and the season has just finished but I’ve got the golf now.

“The international hockey is always in the back of your mind though. We have a home nations tournament in June before the world cup in New Zealand this November.”

She continued: “It’s amazing how far we’ve come. The sport is great but its more about the people you meet and friends you make.

“Being able to travel around the world, experience new cultures and make new friends is what it’s all about.”

Rogers explained how the group are self-funded and are always looking for sponsors to help with travel and kit cost.
