Blackwood Tennis Courts have undergone a huge refurbishment
Blackwood tennis courts have undergone a huge refurbishment

As Wimbledon gets underway, the four tennis courts at Blackwood Showfields have officially reopened as part of a £378,000 borough-wide renovation project.

The renovation is part of the largest transformation of park tennis facilities across Britain, according to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which has worked alongside Caerphilly County Borough Council.

In total, 18 tennis courts are being refurbished across six sites in Caerphilly County Borough. Courts at Morgan Jones Park, Pontymister, Rhymney, Ynysddu, and Ystrad Mynach Park are also being upgraded.

The reopening event at Blackwood Showfields was attended by local authority representatives and members of the LTA and featured various tennis sessions for members of the community.

The work included resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, nets, and gate systems, ensuring the courts are durable and of high quality for years to come.

In addition to the upgrades, the courts will host weekly Barclays free park tennis sessions with equipment provided, as well as local tennis leagues for friendly and social competition.

Rob Hartshorn, head of community and leisure services at the council, was at the court to cut the ribbon. He said: “These newly refurbished courts are a fantastic addition to our community. They provide a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy tennis and stay active.”

Julie Porter, chief operating officer at the LTA, added: “After months of hard work, we’re delighted to see park tennis courts across Caerphilly officially back open to the public, and in better shape than ever.

“Public tennis courts are such vital facilities for getting active, and we want as many people as possible, of all ages and abilities, to pick up a racket and enjoy playing tennis.”
