Lots to shout about across the borough, as the Trethomas Bluebirds returned to winning ways

It was a great weekend of football across the borough, which saw several Caerphilly-based sides pick-up big wins.

In the second tier of Welsh football, Trethomas Bluebirds returned to winning ways after their 3-2 win over Afan Lido Friday night.

Following a 2-0 lost to Carmarthen the weekend previous, Mark Dunford’s side were looking to get three points on the board, but had to come from behind to do so after conceding first at the Centre for Sporting Excellence.

They responded well however. Goals from Thomas Gameson and James Young before the half gave the hosts a lead, before substitute Kallum Thomas grabbed the crucial winner after Lido went down to ten.

That win puts the Bluebirds top of the Cymru South after other results went their way.

One tier below in the Ardal South East, there was no stopping Treowen Stars who made it nine league wins in a row with a 4-1 home victory over Tredegar Town.

Despite going a goal down after eight minutes, the Stars answered back with goals from Christopher Hartland and Carter Campbell before the visitors were reduced to nine men.

It was comfortable from there, as Hartland grabbed his second and Jordan Needs scored from the spot.

Elsewhere in the division, Abercarn claimed a hard fought win over Blaenavon Blues after finding themselves 2-0 down after just 15 minutes.

A brace from Dylan Davies and three other goals through David Griffiths, Cameron Thomas, and Xavier Jones however, meant the three points were secured in a 5-2 victory.

Abercarn move into fifth after that one.

Not such good news for Risca United, who despite taking a 2-1 lead through Lloyd Oliver and Joseph Ward, went on to lose 4-2 to Newport Corinthians after conceding two late goals.

Moving down to the Gwent Premier divisions, Cefn Fforest were involved in a nine-goal thriller at home to Clydach Wasps, in which they managed to claim all three points.

Kieran Vaughan was the standout player grabbing a hat-trick, while Ewan Walkley chipped-in with a brace. 5-4 in the end, meaning Cefn Fforest move into 11th.

Wattsville were the other side in action, but suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Caerleon. A Jonathan Jones goal was the only thing the visitors had to shout about.

Down to division one, Aberbargoed Buds continued their fine start to the season with a 2-1 win over Nantyglo.

A theme of the weekend, the Buds fell behind only for Ross Fowler and Ryan Morgan to fire back and take the three points. They remain in second.

Another side who claimed a 2-1 win were Pentwynmawr Athletic in a close match against Panteg. Goals from Liam Crozier and Joseff Speicher were enough on the day.

Machen had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw against Tredegar. The hosts went ahead through Tyler Kidley early in the game, but couldn’t find the winner and sit in seventh.

Unfortunately for Rhymney, they couldn’t save a point at home to Ponthir despite a late Travis Greening goal. They suffered a 3-2 defeat and sit 12th of 16.

But there was good news for Cwrt Rawlin in the South Wales Alliance League, who claimed a 3-1 win over Fairwater thanks to goals from Jack Harvey, Ryan Williams, and Cory Davies.

Up against top of the table Penygraig United, Nelson Cavaliers suffered their third league defeat of the season in a 2-0 loss.

There was a break in the league action for many, as round two of the Hugh James cup was played over the weekend.

Caerphilly Athletic claimed an emphatic 9-1 victory over Gadlys Rovers to secure their spot in the next round.

No less than four goals from Joey Morelli made sure of the win, alongside fellow scorers Maximilian Franke, Will Toms, and Gareth Hole.

In another comfortable one, Bargoed celebrated a 5-1 win over Llanharan, despite going down to ten men in the first-half.

Two from Jordan Thomas, as well as goals from Christopher Hickling, Jack Evans, and Dylan Thomas, booked their place in the next round.

Aber Valley were the only side to have played on Friday night instead, and took it all the way to penalties where they managed to prevail over Treforest.

It was 2-2 at full-time thanks to goals from Zak Thomas and Nathan Radzimierski, with the visitors holding their nerve best in the shootout to make the next round.

More good news for Caerphilly sides as Gilfach beat Tonyrefail Welfare 4-0 at home to put their name into the hat.

A treble from Jamie Jones and one from Dominic Hunt meant they cruised through.

Cascade will join the likes of Gilfach in the next round following their 3-1 win over Cwmafan on Saturday.

Bleddyn Humphries, Aaron Davies, and Samuel Hann-Jones all getting their name on the scoresheet.

Back to league action in the North Gwent Premier Division, Argoed Reform Club claimed a double digit 10-0 thrashing over Waunlwyd to move into sixth.

Two from Jordan Price, Jak Sillett, and Daniel Hayward, as well as goals from Oliver Thomas, Jamie Young, Chris Evans, and Gavin Conlon meant a Saturday to celebrate for the club.

An equally comfortable 8-1 victory for Fleur De Lys meant the celebrations continued across the division; four from Davin Symes and two from Kane Giffard impressed the most, with Harvey Hampshire and Ethan Oldridge also chipping-in.

Fleur De Lys sit unbeaten at the top of the division and are looking in great shape to push for promotion if they can continue in this vein.

Elsewhere in an-all Caerphilly clash between Blackwood Town and Newbridge Town, it was the visitors who claimed the bragging rights with a 10-0 thumping win over Blackwood.

Three goals from Kristian Sheppard, two from Ethan Phillips and Lewis Watkins, as well as contributions from Liam Hickman, Lewis Roberts, and Stephen Cook, made it an enjoyable day at the office for Newbridge, who are now in third.

In another cup match, Bedwas had an afternoon to forget against Cwmbran Celtic’s third side, losing out 7-1 on the day.

In the TERV Division One, Gelligaer celebrated a thrilling 5-4 win over Treforest Reserves to move into third.

Two penalties from Dewi Price and another brace from Lewis Rowlands, alongside a Michael Boulton finish were enough to secure the three points.

Llanbradach were the other side in action, who had a much more comfortable afternoon with their 10-0 win over Cwm Welfare Reserves.

Joshua Gale had himself an afternoon to remember with five goals and two assists, while Max Howell and Glenn Richards both scored two.

There was also women’s football played on Sunday, with Cascade Ladies in action against Swansea University Women in an Adran Trophy match.

An early Annaliese Lewis goal was enough for the hosts, who secured a 1-0 win on the day.
