The most outstanding sporting individuals, clubs, and organisations have been celebrated at this year’s Caerphilly Sport Awards.
Held at Bryn Meadows Golf Club on Friday November 8, the event recognised volunteers, coaches, athletes, and clubs whose dedication and commitment inspire and empower local communities.
The winner of the Young Volunteer of the Year award went to Valleys Gymnastics Academy, specifically its young leaders who were recognised for their dedication in engaging young people in an active and healthy lifestyle.
The Volunteer of the Year award was handed to John Helmore, who is a member of Ynysddu RFC. John is said to work hard and passionately for the club, as well as the community around him.
Lee Meyrick was recognised as Inclusive Coach of the Year for his dedication to ensuring sports are accessible to all. Lee’s adaptable coaching style at Valley Taekwondo Academy has provided opportunities for participants of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to enjoy and excel in sport.
Jonah Jones, from St Cenydd and Caerphilly Tennis Club, received the Community Coach of the Year award for his contributions to the local sporting community with his work at Sport Caerphilly. Jonah’s dedication has created a supportive environment where players are encouraged to develop and thrive.
Caerphilly Castle Girls and Ladies FC was awarded Club of the Year in recognition of its outstanding achievements in fostering sportsmanship, development, and community involvement.
Several of their coaches, including Bethan Bushen, Gareth Harper, and Dean Thomas, were also all nominated for individual awards.
The Lifetime Achievement to Sports award went to Brian and Alison Huish from Treowen Stars, and Hillary and Ken Goodyear from Rhymney Valley Athletics Club.
Finally, footballer Aaron Ramsey, who is from Caerphilly, was named Sports Personality of the Year for his dedication, skill, and inspiring leadership.
The Cardiff City midfielder and Wales captain was described as a “true local hero” at the ceremony.
