Caerphilly County Borough’s rugby clubs were involved in some high-scoring fixtures on the weekend, as the season’s climax gets ever nearer.

Starting in the WRU Premiership, Bargoed beat Caerphilly County Borough rivals Cross Keys 29-21 at Pandy Park.

The Bulls stay fourth after that win, but the Keys drop down to seventh in the table.

Elsewhere, Newbridge remain ninth after a narrow 31-29 defeat at Ystrad Rhondda.

Down in the National Championship East, Bedwas retain top spot after a 54-14 victory away to Rumney, while Penallta stay third after a 21-20 loss at home to Glamorgan Wanderers.

Ynysddu meanwhile have climbed off the bottom of the table, despite an 87-38 defeat away to St Peters.

Over in Division 1 East, Nelson stay top after beating Abergavenny 38-26 away from home, but Senghenydd remain eighth following a disappointing 50-13 loss at Bedlinog.

Down in Division 2 East, a narrow 43-42 home win over Croesyceiliog boosted title hopes for Blackwood, who are now just two points behind league leaders Blaina with a game in hand.

But on the other side of the table, winless Risca‘s woes continued, with a 29-20 home defeat to Pill Harriers.

Abercarn, who didn’t play on the weekend, drop to eighth, with Pill overtaking them.

Another team resting this weekend was unbeaten Caerphilly, who had no fixture scheduled in Division 2 East Central. Their place at the top of the table was under no threat though, as they currently sit 13 points clear with promotion already secured.

Another team storming ahead in their league is Rhymney, who are now 16 points clear at the top of Division 3 East after thrashing borough rivals Oakdale 82-12.

The result means Oakdale, who have lost all 14 league games this season, remain rooted to the foot of the table.

Abertysswg Falcons, who are just one place above Oakdale, also fell to defeat this weekend. They were beaten 41-9 at New Panteg.

Elsewhere in the league, Fleur de Lys drop to fourth after losing 39-22 at Nantyglo, who climb to third – while Machen, who didn’t play on the weekend, drop to eighth.

There were some disappointing results in Division 4 East too. Pontllanfraith drop down a place to eighth after a 92-14 loss at home to second-place Gwernyfed.

Fourth-placed Bedwellty meanwhile lost 21-15 at home to second-from-bottom Whiteheads.

However, Crumlin stay third after beating local rivals Llanhilleth 26-17 away.

Down in League 5 East, Hafodyrynys have moved up to third, leapfrogging Blackwood Stars, who they defeated 18-14.

Meanwhile, Hollybush stay fifth after losing to league leaders Tredegar Ironsides 27-8 away from home.

Deri, whose game with lowly Magor was postponed, remain second – 13 points behind the Ironsides having played two less games.

In League 6 East A, Trinant move up into third after a crushing 84-7 win over bottom-place Girling.

It was the only fixture played in the league over the weekend. However, New Tredegar remain 12 points clear at the top, while Cwmcarn United stay one place above bottom.

And finally, in League 6 East Central, Bargoed Athletic drew 20-20 at home to Brecon Athletic, and stay second in the table. Penallta Athletic were not in action, but stay sixth in the eight-team league.
