Caerphilly’s Aaron Ramsey has officially been unveiled by Mexican side Pumas UNAM, following his departure from Cardiff City.
The Wales captain, 34, becomes the first Welsh – and British – player to represent the Liga MX side, who are based in Mexico City.
He left the Bluebirds this summer, having rejoined his boyhood club two years ago.
Ramsey came up through the Bluebirds’ academy before leaving the club to join Arsenal in 2008, at the age of 17.
After 11 years in North London, the midfielder would go on to have spells at Juventus, Rangers, and Nice before moving back to the Welsh capital in 2023. However, his return was marred by injuries, and coincided with a difficult period for the club.
After manager Erol Bulut was sacked early in the 2024/25 season, his assistant Omer Riza stepped in to replace him. But with relegation from the Championship staring the club in the face, Riza was sacked with three games remaining – and Ramsey was thrust into the dugout on a caretaker basis.
However, he was unable to save Cardiff from the almost-inevitable drop, and now the club prepares for life in League One – the third tier of English football.
Ramsey, a former pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, had been linked with the manager job at City following relegation, but instead left the club at the end of his contract.
He said: “I leave Cardiff City with a lot of different emotions.
“Although it has been personally challenging at times, I made sure to give my all on and off the pitch for this wonderful club that is so close to my heart.
“For now I am on a new adventure but I will be keeping a close eye on the club as always and it will forever have my support.
“Good luck to the staff and all the players for the upcoming season and a big thank you to the amazing fans. Until next time.”
