The most outstanding sporting individuals and clubs have been celebrated at this year’s Caerphilly Sport Awards.

Held at Bryn Meadows Golf Club on Friday November 7, the event recognised volunteers, coaches, athletes, and clubs whose dedication and commitment inspire and empower local communities.

The event also saw Welsh rugby legend Steve Fenwick, who earned 31 caps for Wales and 12 for the British and Irish Lions, inducted into the Team Caerphilly Sports Wall of Fame – joining the likes of boxer Lauren Price and Wales football captain Aaron Ramsey.

Among the winners at this year’s ceremony was Ioan Walters of Wattsville FC, who won the Aaron Ramsey Young Volunteer of the Year award, while Lee Couzens, of Caerphilly Tennis Club, won the Welsh Sport Association Volunteer of the Year honour.

Other winners on the night included Julie Proctor of Dragonflies Trampoline Club, who received the Phylyp Butler Memorial Cup Inclusive Award, while Caerphilly Junior Netball Club’s Michaela Pine was named Dragons RFC Community Coach of the Year.

There was also victory on the night for the Ystrad Mynach-based Sue Noake Hockey Club, who were crowned Club of the Year.

The final award issued on the night was the Lifetime Achievement to Sport. This was won by both Alison Dacey, of Ystrad Mynach Netball Club, and Caerphilly Junior Netball Club’s Karen Williams.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Caerphilly Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “These awards shine a spotlight on the incredible people and clubs that make our communities stronger through sport. Their dedication, leadership and passion ensure that opportunities to be active are open to everyone across Caerphilly.”

The evening also featured an address from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of Britain’s most successful Paralympians and a leading voice for inclusion and equality in sport.
