A promising young athlete from Pontllanfraith has won double gold at the Welsh National Indoor Athletics Championships.

Jayden Jones, 11, achieved success at the Under-13s Boys long jump and sprint hurdles on Saturday January 17 – breaking the Welsh Championship record in the process.

He is now ranked number one in the UK in his age category for long jump and sprint hurdles.

Competing at Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletics Centre, Jayden won the long jump by more than half a metre – breaking the Welsh Championship record that had stood since 2008.

Jayden continued this success in the sprint hurdles, equalling the Welsh record, moving him to second on the all-time Welsh rankings.

The youngster is following in the footsteps of his hurdles coach and father, Kris Jones, who was a Great Britain Junior international sprint hurdler.

Young athlete’s title success at national championship

Kris praised his son following the championships and said he had “delivered under pressure with two commanding performances”.

Jayden, a pupil at Islwyn High School and member of Rhymney Valley Athletics Club, started his athletics journey aged around six.

As well as athletics, Jayden is also a keen rugby player for Oakdale and has also represented his Islwyn Schools District over the last year.
