Caerphilly Athletic are seeking a league-cup double

As Caerphilly Athletic celebrate winning the Ardal South East and gaining promotion to the Cymru South, they have a chance to land the league-cup double against Pure Swansea.

The cup final, which is set to be played in Bridgend on Thursday May 14, will see the two best teams in the Ardal South East and Ardal South West go toe-to-toe.

Pure Swansea, who have none other than Swansea City legend Lee Trundle playing for them aged 49, won their league by six points and will join Caerphilly in the Cymru South next season.

Having only just won the league themselves, Caerphilly Athletic manager Ian Butterworth was asked how he’d get his side focused for a cup final. He said: “It’s not ideal that it’s being played on a Thursday, but that’s just the way it is and we’ll have to deal with it.

Newly-promoted Caerphilly Athletic defy the odds to win league title

“I’ve never focused on cup competitions, and this will be my first here at the club. There would have been quite a lot of pressure on us if we hadn’t had already won the league, but this is just a bonus now.

“The boys are still very determined to win, but I feel like the pressure is off and we can play our game.”

Asked what he knows about the opposition, Butterworth added: “They’re obviously a strong group with some veteran players who can make all the difference in these big games. It’s the best in the east versus the best in the west so it’ll be fun and a great advert for the game. I’m really excited.”
