Nelson see off Abercwmboi to win Mid District Division One Cup

Euan Jones was the hero after his last-gasp try snatched glory for Nelson as they defeated Abercwmboi 34-27 at Pontypridd’s Sardis Road to lift the Worthington’s Mid District Division One Cup.

It was one of two tries in a man-of-the-match performance from the Nelson No 8, while scrum-half Lewis Ryan, full-back Daf Bowen, and centre Alec Jones were the other Nelson try scorers.

Outside half Ciaran Davies sent over three conversions and a penalty.

For Nelson, it ensured silverware to end a campaign that saw them finish fourth in Division One East, as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the WRU Division One Cup.

It was also Mid District Cup redemption for the Unicorns on the same ground where they lost to Cambrian Welfare in the Worthington’s Division One final two years ago.

The Mid District clubs in the Admiral WRU National Leagues all battle it out for a place in their divisional final based on their league results over the course of the season.

After lifting the Division Five Cup in each of the previous two seasons, Deri had been looking to make it a hat-trick of Mid District triumphs, but they fell just short – going down 35-24 to Tylorstown at Sardis Road.

Jack Ould, Callum Pritchard, Chris Lloyd, and captain Adam Phillips were the Tylorstown try scorers, with Ould also kicking three conversions and three penalties.

Shayne Harding was at the double for an under-strength Deri side, who were without eight regular players. Martin Morgan and Braydon George also dotted down, while Aaron Jones added the extras to two of them.

It was still a hugely successful season for Deri, having been promoted as champions of Division Four East, winning 17 of their 18 league matches.

They can now look forward to Division Three rugby next season.
