Having been promoted to the second tier of Welsh football, Caerphilly Athletic’s new kit collection is a tribute to the “town which has supported us every step of the way”.
Nick Edwards joined Caerphilly’s backroom staff over the summer from Cwrt Rawlin, with the newly-promoted side looking to take things up a notch after making it to the Cymru South.
The social media manager described this as the “perfect opportunity” to get creative with the club’s new kit launch, and worked closely with the players and the community to design four kits inspired by Caerphilly town itself.
Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Nick said: “We really wanted to pay homage to where we come from and the people who have supported us every step of the way.
“Now felt like the perfect time to take a risk and put ourselves out there. If you don’t stand out, you blend in.”
Nick and the club got in touch with Tor Sports – the same kit designers who have worked with Llantwit Major on their popular recent strips such as a fish and chips inspired goalkeeper kit, as well as a colourful Mr Blobby number.
Nick continued: “We sat down and asked ourselves ‘what matters to the people of Caerphilly?’ We started with the castle, so our home kit is made up of lots of mini cut outs of the castle, including the leaning tower section.
“The away kit is a red top made up of Tommy Cooper’s fez, and we had fun working with all the lads to get the photoshoot sorted ahead of the recent official kit launch.”

Caerphilly were even more ambitious when it came to the goalkeeper’s kit, with the home kit being bright yellow and covered in Caerphilly Cheese, while the keeper’s away strip is designed to look like a Wetherspoons plate.

“We thought why not have a bit of fun? ‘Spoons is where everyone goes in town, the idea behind the kit is instantly recognisable – we really want to see people wearing these kits around the town.”

Asked what the reaction was from the players when they saw the kits, Nick added: “They loved them. They were shocked at how unique and high-quality each top was, and we can’t wait for everyone to see them on the pitch.”
Caerphilly debuted their home kit in a 0-0 draw on Friday August 7 against Cardiff Draconians in front of a packed Centre for Sporting Excellence, and the club is hoping to see more crowds like that going forward.
Nick added: “The club has grown so quickly, I think it’s important for us to remember our roots, and these kits do exactly that.
“We want to be associated with more than just football, we want to reflect the town of Caerphilly and all the people in it.”
