Nelson Rugby Club’s first team begin with a shaky start to the season, despite league promotion, a clubhouse extension and a new kit sponsored by Bryn Quarry Ltd.

The team, who now play in Division 3 South East , were promoted at the end of last season and are currently mid-table in sixth place.

After a fist match win against Penarth was followed up by another victory against Dowlais, the team have since drawn against Pentyrch and lost a match to Rhiwbina.

The team suffered a further loss of 26 to 13 away against Tonyrefail at the weekend.

Kerry Owens, first team coach, said: “The season started really well for us, following last season’s promotion and increased sponsorship from companies like Bryn Quarry, together with fellow sponsors Bowen Contracting, CG Direct, Anthony Gunning and CDS.

“We’re pleased to be holding our own in the new league and made a good start against stronger competition, and hope our recent loss of form will not continue as injuries and other commitments allow us to pick our best fifteen.

“In particular I’d like to single out inside-centre Dan Jones, who won the September Supporter’s Player of the Month award.

“The club currently has a team playing at every age level, from eight years old to 19, and the clubhouse is abuzz with activity.

“In addition to the rugby, we have events happening every weekend and every week we host functions and put on other activities like dance classes.

“After the terrific extension to the clubhouse earlier in the year, we really want make the place a resource for the entire community. ”

Main team sponsor Alun Price, from the Bryn Group, said: “It’s great to see the club really growing and becoming the heart of the community, with teams at all age levels and non-sporting events all year round.

“It’s a pleasure to give something back to everyone at the club, which has given our business such support over the years.

“I wish everyone at the club every success with the coming season.”
