College team reaches national rugby final

Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus rugby team has reached the final of the Welsh Rugby Union Colleges League after winning the last two matches of the regular season.

The side made it 11 wins out of 12 after beating Gower College Swansea 14-5 and Bridgend College 29-9.

They will battle it out for the championship crown with Coleg Sir Gar on Wednesday, April 13, at Brewery Field, Bridgend.

A win would add to an outstanding season for the team, who will also playing Coleg Sir Gar in the semi final of the British Colleges Cup after a resounding 58-0 victory against Henley College Coventry in the quarter finals.

The Newport Gwent Dragons Academy is based at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus and 12 students also took part in a recent Dragons Academy match against the touring Japan U18 team at Rodney Parade in Newport which finished 32-22 to the home side.

Sports Lecturer Steven Llewellyn said: “The team are delighted to be in the final of the WRU Colleges League and are preparing for a tough final match. 

 “Students have done incredibly well this season and have made excellent progress, building on each success. We hope to complete the season by winning the cup. This will be just reward for the hard work and effort that has been put in by the players and coaches this season.”
