Abertridwr karate club celebrates 30 years of success

Sport | | Published: 17:00, Monday May 18th, 2015.

A karate club based in Abertridwr is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Over that time, Caerphilly Kyokushinkai Club has boasted a number of accomplished karate athletes.

The club was opened by Sensei Julian Baker and leadership was passed to Sensei Laurence – a member of the British team captained the Welsh knockdown team.

The club has taken part in the Caerphilly 10k since it began, running in full kit to raise funds for charities, while five of its senior members have been promoted to 1st Dan and 2nd Dan.

James Wakefield, Daniel Armstrong and Gareth Farrell were promoted to 1st Dan (Shodan) whilst Richard Sapey and Kay Mosley were both promoted to 2nd Dan (Nidan) under the sharp eye of Hanshi Steve Arniel, a 10th Dan.

The club is in a very strong position in its teaching capabilities and every learner is given full attention as they develop.

They meet at Abertridwr YMCA on Tuesdays and Thursday, Juniors 6pm till 7pm and senior 7pm till 8.30pm. For information contact Sensei Laurence on 07971 414464.
