Caerphilly County Borough’s top rugby teams saw some action over the Christmas and New Year period despite the poor weather. Here is our round-up of how they got on.
Bedwas kicked-off their festive action with a disappointing 22-22 draw against Ebbw Vale on December 12 at the Bridge Field.
The Vale fought back from 14 points down in the Foster’s Challenge Cup clash to seal a draw with a last kick of the match conversion.
Bedwas put that match to bed and bounced back on the return Challenge Cup fixture on December 16 beating Ebbw Vales 36-6.
In yet another very wet match, the rain barely stopped the entire 80 minutes, but Bedwas handled the atrocious conditions better than their Gwent neighbours and ran out deserved winners.
The win sees Bedwas lead the way in Group C of the competition with two wins and a draw from the three matches played.
Bedwas were back in Principality Premiership action on Boxing Day, again against home side Ebbw Vale.
This time the Steelmen ran out as winners with a 24-10 scoreline.
Bedwas’ hopes of another win at Eugene Cross Park were blown away after a poor first half.
Ebbw attacked from the outset and Bedwas could not contain their hosts.
The recent poor conditions saw a waterlogged pitch at Cross Keys’ Pandy Park and Bedwas’ Premiership match against them on January 2 was called off.
Keys have now got to rearrange three home fixtures because of recent poor weather. As well as the Bedwas fixture, they still have to play a Challenge Cup fixture against Newport as well as a league match. These were due to be played on December 16 and Boxing Day.
Keys’ next match is against Bedwas in the Foster’s Challenge Cup at Pandy Park on Wednesday, January 13 as they have a bye through the first round of the Swalec Cup on January 9.
Bedwas’ match against Pontypool in that competition on January 9 was also called off due to bad weather and will be rearranged.
Keys are currently sitting fourth in the Premiership while Bedwas are eighth. In the Challenge Cup, Keys are third in Group C after two games.
In the Swalec Championship Bargoed are currently sitting fifth, one shy of the all-important promotion places into the Premiership.
The club didn’t have much luck with the weather with league clashes against RGC 1404, Cardiff Met and Pontypool all called off.
Bargoed’s away match against Neath in the Swalec Cup on January 9 was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
Newbridge too had a miserable time with league matches against Cardiff Met and Tata Steel called off, again because of the weather.
A Boxing Day clash with Pontypool saw a 38 – 8 defeat, which followed a 31-0 loss against RGC 1404 on December 12.
