Rugby Union: Promoted Bargoed find out their opening day Premiership opponents

Bargoed RFC will play Neath at Bargoed Park in their opening game of the 2016/17 Principality Premiership after fixtures for the division were released on Friday July 8.

The newly-promoted side face the Welsh All Blacks on Saturday September 3 before travelling to Llandovery a week later and fellow promotion winners RGC1404 on Saturday October 29.

In the rest of the division, Bedwas open against Pontypridd, before a tough trip to Newport, while Cross Keys are also at home against Merthyr for the first game of the season.

Bargoed have been drawn against their fellow Caerphilly sides Cross Keys and Bedwas on Saturday November 5 and 19 respectively, and face a tricky tie the following week against defending champions Ebbw Vale.

The Welsh Rugby Union has only released 15 rounds of fixtures, up to the weekend of January 7 2017, after it was announced that the Premiership would split into two conferences at the half-way point of the 2016/17 season.

After 15 matches, the division, which has been increased to 16 teams, will split down the middle into two separate groups of eight teams.

The group with the top eight teams will battle it out for the title, while the lower division sides will face off against each other, but can not be relegated, after the Premiership was ringfenced until the 2018/19 season.

The play-off rules remain the same, with the team in first place booking a spot in the final, while those in second and third face each other in a semi-final.

The mid-season split means that not every team will play each at home and away, and puts more onus on picking up points pre-January, in order to make the cut in the top group.

Cross Keys face a tough run-in, playing local rivals Newport on Christmas Eve, before travelling to Pontypridd on New Year’s Eve and ending the first half of the season in Ebbw Vale against the Steelmen.
