Rugby Union: Sevens star signs up at Bedwas

Sport | | Published: 12:36, Friday August 5th, 2016.

Bedwas have signed Wales sevens international Nicky Griffiths as part of their preparations ahead of the 2016/17 Principality Premiership season.

The scrum-half has a wealth of experience, being able to count Bridgend Ravens, Ospreys, Jersey, and Newport Gwent Dragons amongst his previous clubs.

Joining from Cardiff Blues, Griffiths will be part of a new-look Bedwas backline next season, which includes fellow recent recruits Pat Lewis from the Dragons Academy, Garin Payne from Aberdare, and Aaron Bramwell from Neath.

Bedwas have also strengthened up front, with head coach Steve Law adding Jack Williams and Stuart Vokes from Newbridge, Robson Blake from Bedlinog, and Dan Crimmins from Glamorgan Wanderers.

Tom Bell and Rhys Verley have also both signed for the club, having left the Dragons Academy, while ex-Neath star Lee Evans has decided to return to the game after a break, adding depth to an already powerful forward pack.

Steve Law’s backroom staff has also been reshuffled, with Adrian Withers replacing long-term incumbent Andy Harrison as team manager.
Bedwas Chairman, Mark Lewis, said: “We have appointed a new team manager due to the departure of stalwart Andy Harrison, who has left the position due to work and family commitments.

“We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Adrian Withers, who was head coach at Nelson RFC for eight seasons, helping them win several promotions including promotion into Division One.

“Adrian is relishing the opportunity to gain further rugby experience at a higher level and we believe he will freshen things up at the club. He will be a great link between the playing side and the off-pitch team.”

Deri Mattravers, who hung up his boots at the age of 41 last season, will add to his 12 years at Bedwas by taking on a coaching role, while fly-half Richard Powell will take over the club captaincy from prop Daniel Preece.

Powell, 28, is seven points away from 1,000 in his career.
Chairman Mark Lewis added: “We would like to thank Dan Preece for doing an excellent job as club captain last season. Richard Powell has been selected to lead the team this year and we all wish him well and hope that he enjoys the challenge and honour of club captaincy.

“The club is going through some structural changes off the field in order to keep pace with the ever increasing need to finance our semi-professional status.”
