Penallta RFC will launch the defence of their WRU National Plate title against league rivals Risca as they aim to make it three final appearances in as many years.

The draw for the Welsh Rugby Union’s Cup, Plate And Bowl competitions has been made, with 314 clubs vying for a place at Finals Day at the Principality Stadium next spring.

In the WRU National Cup, holders RGC 1404 travel to Ebbw Vale, while Cross Keys host defeated finalists Pontypridd in a repeat of last season’s semi-final.

Keys put in a spirited display against the 13-times finalists Ponty, but ultimately fell to a tight 42-37 loss in the semi-final at Sardis Road, and will look to go one stage further this year.

Bargoed face Trebanos, Bedwas travel to Narbeth, while Newbridge take on Championship new boys Rhydyfelin.

Following a dramatic 16-16 win over Ystalyfera at Finals Day 2017, which was decided on try-count, Penallta will defend their Plate crown against Risca on Saturday October 7, in a mirror of their opening Division 1 East fixture.

The Pitmen are looking to make it a third consecutive final appearance after last season’s success was preceded by agonising defeat in 2016 to Bedlinog.

Elsewhere in the draw, Nelson face Talywain, semi-finalists Abercarn take on Nantyglo, and Bowl finalists Caerphilly host Croesyceiliog.

The WRU National Bowl competition is wide open this year, after both of last season’s finalists were promoted and as a result will be participating in the Plate competition.

Along with Amman United and Caerphilly, semi-finalists Cilfynydd have also been promoted, meaning Cardigan will be the only side of last season’s final four to compete in 2017/18.

Cwmcarn United travel the short distance to Cefn Fforest in round one on Saturday September 16, while Machen host Llanrumney, Pontllanfraith take on New Tredegar, and Hafodyrynys have a local derby against Llanhilleth.
