Blackwood Town Cricket Club is gearing up for the new season – having missed the entirety of last season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The club, which has three teams, will compete in brand new kit next season thanks to a £300 donation from Wales and West Utilities, the company with responsibility for the gas network in Wales.

The cricket club’s new kits are sponsored by the company, whose Area Operations Manager, Dai Rees, lives near the Highfields ground on Gordon Road, Blackwood, where the club’s first and second teams play.

The club’s third team, known as Pontllanfraith, play at Islwyn Park.

All three teams compete in the South East Wales Cricket League.

The club also runs youth teams at U9, U11, U13, U15 and U19 level, as well as a women’s team.

Mr Rees said: “Living so close to the field I have become involved in the club, helping with general maintenance and upkeep. This past year has been tough on many people and the game brings a lot to everyone’s lives – both physically and mentally.

“When I learnt that the club was seeking sponsorship, I approached my employer, Wales & West Utilities, and we were all delighted when they stepped in to help out.”

Gareth Berry, Fundraising Coordinator at Blackwood Town Cricket Club, said: “We are really grateful to people like Dai, who make it possible for all our sides to play cricket each week. The upkeep of the grounds and the clubhouse is no small task, and we are reliant on our volunteers to help out regularly.

“It’s amazing that Dai’s employer has supported his efforts. On behalf of our club players and members I’d like to say thanks to Wales and West Utilities – we are all proud to wear their logo.”
