Gerwyn Price has won his first PDC title since March after a comeback win in the Players Championship 21 final on Monday night.
Price, 36, from Markham, came from behind to beat Australia’s Damon Heta 8-7 in Barnsley, securing his 20th PDC title in the process.
The reigning world champion and current world number one Price, found himself 4-0 down before managing to fight his way back into the contest.
With the game at 6-2, Heta was just two away from winning the tie, but Price hit his stride – winning three legs on the bounce to close the gap to 6-5.
Heta won the next leg to move to within one leg of victory, but Price won the next three legs to clinch the title.
After the win, Price said: “I got off to a bad start. He probably deserved to be 2-2 as I missed a couple of doubles, and was kicking myself,” said Price.
“When I started playing I wasn’t as good as I am now, and I have learnt to never give up.
“If I find my game, I will always get myself back in. Even if I was 7-0 down now I have the belief that I will get myself back into it.
“Everyone wants to win and win tournaments, but I know that I have been playing well.
“I’m back in the winner’s circle, I dug in and it would have taken something special to beat me today. “
En route to the final, Price beat William O’Connor 6-3 in the opening match, before beating Lukas Wenig 6-1.
He followed it up with a 6-4 win over Martin Schindler and a 6-2 win over Luke Humphries.
Price then beat Callan Rydz 6-5 to reach the semi-finals.
There, he beat Ian White 7-3 to book his place in the final.
