A 75-year-old woman has died and a police community support officer has suffered life-changing injuries following a four-car crash on the A472 between Crumlin and Pontypool.

The crash involved a grey Peugeot 508, a police car, a white Nissan Juke and a silver Vauxhall Insignia.

Initial reports said the incident involved three cars, but Gwent Police has now confirmed four cars were involved.

The woman, from Llanfoist near Abergavenny, was a passenger in a grey Peugeot 508. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist police officers.

The community support officer was in the police car alongside a Gwent Police constable, who was taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment but has since been discharged.

A 77-year-old man from Llanfoist, who was driving the Peugeot, was taken to hospital after suffering injuries to his arm and leg. He is currently in a stable condition.

The two passengers in the Nissan Juke – a 27-year-old woman and a two-year-old girl from Blaenau Gwent – were taken to the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran as a precaution after suffering minor injuries.

Meanwhile, a 54-year-old woman, from the Markham area, was a passenger in the Vauxhall Insignia and received treatment at the scene from paramedics.

The road was closed in both directions after the crash at around 12.30pm on Thursday, September 23. Police reported the road reopened at 12.41am on Friday morning.

Gwent Police Sergeant James Bailey said: “Enquiries are ongoing and we would ask that anyone who may have witnessed this collision and has not yet spoken to the police to contact us.

“We would also ask anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.

He added: “We can confirm that the police car involved in the collision was not attending an emergency call at the time.

“This incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with normal procedure.”

Personnel from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Wales Air Ambulance and Welsh Ambulance Service were also in attendance at the crash.
