Members of Parliament are set to get a £2,200-a-year a pay rise from next month – but local MPs have vowed to give more to charities and community groups.

The 2.7% increase will take MP salaries to £84,144 a year.

The increase has been decided by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, which sets MP salaries.

However, the rise is below the rate of inflation, which is 5.4% – meaning the rise actually represents a real-terms pay cut.

But nonetheless, all three Labour MPs representing constituencies in Caerphilly County Borough have said community groups and charities will benefit from increased donations as a result of their pay rises.

Gerald Jones, MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, said: “I entered politics to make a difference to our communities, not for personal gain.

“From the first day I was elected, I’ve set aside money to support local groups and causes. Any increase made by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority would allow me to further support local groups.”

Meanwhile, Islwyn MP Chris Evans said he “does not feel a pay rise for MPs is appropriate at this time when so many people are feeling the pinch”

He added: “I will therefore be increasing my continued charitable donations in light of this decision.”

These sentiments were echoed by Caerphilly’s MP, Wayne David. He said: “Like my colleagues in Merthyr and Rhymney and Islwyn, I will be increasing my donations to charity.”
