Members of Machen Cricket Club completed the trek between March 24 and 27

Machen cricketers have raised more than £1,200 for their club with a 50-mile fundraising trek from Cardiff to Brecon over four days.

Machen were one of five clubs involved in the Valleys Cricket project, alongside Cardiff, Pontypridd, Abercynon and Hopkinstown.

The money will be used to develop facilities at Machen Welfare Ground for the future of the club, after beating the original target of £1,000 – thanks to more than 50 donations.

The group of walkers were sent off from Glamorgan Cricket’s Sophia Gardens headquarters by county coach Matthew Maynard, who later joined them on the third day of the trek.

“It is an incredible effort to pass our target comfortably, and although hard at times, it will go down as one of the most enjoyable social events I have ever done,” said club captain Jon Toghill, who completed all four days of the walk.

“It was an awesome few days, the boys showed a true commitment and should hold their heads high after a superb effort,” added Machen first XI captain Rhydian Knox.

They were accompanied by Rhydian’s father Dai, second team skipper Nigel Hicks, Johnny Cross, Delme Smith and Dean Lewis among dozens of walkers from the five clubs.

Machen play a series of friendlies through April with the South East Wales league season beginning on April 30.
