Primary school pupils have raised more than £3,500 for charity by walking eight miles each.

More than 250 pupils and staff members from St Helen’s RC School in Caerphilly took part in the challenge as part of the C2Cycling campaign.

The campaign is raising money for Velindre and LATCH children’s cancer charity – with eight miles the distance between the two Cardiff-based charities and the school.

Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 walked around the school yard 30 times a day for six days to reach their eight-mile target.

Meanwhile, pupils in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 walked around Caerphilly to hit their target.

The C2Cycling group are this month cycling more than 600km from Cardiff Castle to Edinburgh Castle to raise funds for the two charities – with a fundraising target of £50,000.

Sophie Sanchez, headteacher at St Helen’s RC Primary School, said: “Each year during Lent we have a whole school Lenten project, where the school chooses a charity to support.

“We have helped Mary’s meals, CAFOD and the local food banks in the past. This year as the religious education topic focused on journeys and footprints and coincided with Welsh week – where children learn all about Wales and their local environment – we decided that C2Cycling would be a fantastic group of people to support and raise money for two Welsh charities close to many people’s hearts.”

Nick Robbins, who is from Caerphilly and is organising the ride, said: “The support from St Helen’s RC Primary School has been outstanding.

“We are so pleased the children and teaching staff got on board with our fundraising and thrilled at the amount they have raised.”

The cycle ride will get underway on Tuesday, April 12, with 28 amateur cyclists taking part.

A fundraising pack to support the cyclists can be downloaded online at c2cycling.co.uk, while direct donations can be made at SponsorMe.co.uk
