FDL Ladies’ women football side has enjoyed a successful start to life, ten months after its founding.
Praised for their tremendous support network and togetherness, the team has seen a project, started by three women, turn into two sides competing in a league.
The Fleur de Lis-based outfit now has 25 members, with their ages ranging from 30 to 70.
The women meet every Tuesday evening between 6.30pm and 8pm to train, and compete once a month in ‘league days,’ where both of FDL’s teams play four or five games each.
Despite just starting this season, both FDL pink and FDL black have had a brilliant first season, sitting third and sixth with one league day remaining. On top of this, most of their members had not had any previous experience playing football, adding to their inspirational story.
Off the pitch, the club has been hosting numerous social events and fundraisers to cover the cost of equipment and future tours. They run a quiz night every month, alongside charity nights to engage its community too.
The team has also had a positive impact on players’ physical and mental health, as well as their social lives – with the club placing a strong emphasis on community, fitness, and friendship.
The future is looking bright for the club too, as they prepare to embark on their first tour in October, to Weston-super-Mare.
They have also organised a ‘Walking Footballathon,’ where their members and the community will engage on a 24-hour walking football game, starting at midday on September 12.
On June 14, the club will celebrate its first anniversary by hosting a walking football tournament.
