A major fire which broke out above an Indian takeaway in Blackwood has been extinguished by firefighters.

The fire broke out at the Everest takeaway on Pentwyn Road, near High Street, at around 9am on Monday, April 11.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Several crews from across South Wales attended the scene and upon arrival were faced with a well-developed fire. Crews worked alongside emergency service colleagues to secure the area.

“Firefighters used specialist equipment, including breathing apparatuses, hose reel jets and an aerial ladder platform to tackle and extinguish the fire.”

The fire was put out at around 12.36pm, but fire crews remain at the scene damping down the property.

The fire service said the building will be re-inspected as a safety precaution.

A re-inspection of the property will be carried out as a safety precaution.

No injuries have been reported.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “Officers attended, along with firefighters from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, to assist with traffic management and public safety.

“The road is currently closed to traffic and the incident is ongoing.”
