Machen Cricket club are on their best run of form for 144 years – and will look to stretch their unbeaten streak to eight games this Saturday against second-place Whitchurch.

Machen, who play in division four of the South East Wales Cricket League, have a famous invincible season firmly in their sights, according to captain Rhydian Knox.

Knox said: “Because of Machen’s location [in between Newport and Cardiff] we’ve only got a small pool of players to choose from.

“Towards the end of last season, we recruited a couple of Cardiff boys who play midweek and they liked it so much they stayed on.

“None of us are superstars, but we’re a good team. Promotion would mean a greater pull which is huge.”

Due to the ongoing SEWCL restructuring of the divisions, only one team will be promoted this season, with Machen hopeful they can secure that spot.

The club are also considering their future, recently reopening some junior age groups, as well as creating a brand new girls-only team.

“After a successful experiment before the season, we recognised the need for a girls team,” said Knox, “we’d love to get more girls involved,” he added.

Machen Cricket club will be hosting a family day on Saturday afternoon at Machen Recreational Ground.
