Machen Cricket Club in action against Whitchurch Heath

With the cricket season now at the halfway stage, there are several sides in Caerphilly County Borough bidding for the all-important promotion slot, whilst others face relegation.

Starting with struggling Newbridge, they faced off against Sudbrook in the top division looking to secure only their fourth win in ten games.

It wasn’t to be, however, as Sudbrook cruised to victory with seven wickets to spare. This leaves Newbridge last in the table with 87 points and it all to do.

Meanwhile, Blackwood Town hosted Monmouth in division two, with hopes of narrowing the gap to top of the table Ebbw Vale.

Monmouth opened the batting and were soon all out after 27 overs for 96 runs. Blackwood made light work of the chase, winning by nine wickets in just eight overs.

In division three, Pontymister and Crosskeys were set to face off against Sully Centurions; but due to bad weather, the game was abandoned. Pontymister and Crosskeys remain firmly in the hunt for top spot but remain second and 17 points off Barry Athletic.

Elsewhere in the division, Crumlin did manage to get onto the field, where they travelled to Cardiff to face their thirds.

Despite being stuck in the bottom half of the table in seventh, Crumlin sealed a dominating victory, chasing just 67 runs, the visitors won with nine wickets to spare.

Top of the table Machen played host to second place Whitchurch at the Welfare Ground, with hopes of extending their unbeaten run to a record eight games.

With weather reducing the match to just 25 overs, Machen managed to chase down Whitchurch’s reasonable target of 124 with seven wickets in hand. The side now have promotion to the third division firmly in their sights.

Abercarn were due to miss a game and remain seventh in division seven. They’ll hope to improve on their position before the season ends.

Finally, a division nine matchup between third place Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer and bottom of the league Llandaff was as comfortable as could be expected for the visiting side.

Llandaff set a modest 107 for Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer to catch; they did so in 24 overs with six wickets to spare. They remain third place and 22 points off of first.
