“None of us are professionals, but that’s the point. People feel comfortable to express themselves and leave feeling better”

After a successful few months running a mens’ mental health walking group, former coal miner Phillip Williams has announced a new sit-down group at Rhymney Rugby Club.

‘Don’t Bottle It’ will be the next step in addressing the growing number of people dealing with mental health issues, according to Phillip, who lives in Pontlottyn.

He has been working closely with Lead Wellbeing Officer for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Dr David Llewellyn, as part of the project.

At the group’s launch last Thursday, Phillip was met with support from councillors, Tyrone Harrison from the British Legion and Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney MP Gerald Jones.

“It was a really positive evening”, said Phillip. “Everyone got involved, with other mental health groups – such as Bridgend’s Lads and Dads who have over 1,300 members – in attendance”, he added.

This will now be the third support network Phillip has created, with a men-only group meeting at Rhymney Rugby Club every Wednesday before walking across the valley and a more general walking group that meet every Monday at Parc Cwm Darran.

Phillip continued: “It’s great to see the support for these types of projects but at the same time it’s heartbreaking that it’s needed.

“As someone who suffers with mental health problems, I find being as busy as possible helps me cope. Without something to do I’d spiral.”

Also in attendance was Stephen Davies, the host of Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr’s in-house radio station, YYFM. He said: “We are very much looking forward to working in partnership with Phil Williams and David Llewellyn on the URV Men’s Health Group.

“The walking group is also a marvellous idea. It will help relieve stress, tension and boost physical and mental energy for everyone who gets involved.

“Physical activity has a huge potential to enhance your wellbeing and I am looking forward to going on one of the walks myself in the near future.”

Phillip concluded: “The aim of this is to hopefully get this form of therapy recognised by the NHS.

“I’ve been contacted by a number of support agencies offering advice on debt management, homelessness and other forms of mental health that I hope to incorporate soon.

“None of us are professionals, but that’s the point. People feel comfortable to express themselves and leave feeling better.”

The group will be at Rhymney Rugby Club every Thursday between 6:30 and 8:30pm. Phillip can be called in confidence on 07312 101523.
