Work by Wales and West Utilities to upgrade gas pipes in Blackwood has been delayed after residents voiced concerns they would be trapped in their street.

The work, along Cefn Road, should have started on August 30 but will not happen now until September 12 – after Blackwood’s Beach Party, being held on September 10.

Cefn Road will be closed in phases as work progresses from its junction of High Street towards the junction with South View Road.

However, during the works the barrier near the junction of High Street and the Methodist Church will be opened with temporary traffic lights installed.

Although the delay has been agreed, yellow diversion signs in the area still state a closure from August 30.

Blackwood councillor Kevin Etheridge said he and other ward members had been contacted by concerned residents and the church over the work and had made representations to Wales and West and the council to get the work delayed.

He told Caerphilly Observer: “Nobody would have been able to get out if the works had gone ahead as scheduled while the beach party was happening.”

Wales and West Utilities’ Adam Smith, who is managing the gas pipe upgrade work, said: “This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.

“We will work as safely and as quickly as possible to finish the work, whilst keeping inconvenience to a minimum for local people and road users.”
