A deteriorated memorial commemorating the former Windsor Colliery in Abertridwr is being replaced with a new, redesigned one.

A ceremony to unveil the new memorial was meant to happen in March 2020, but was postponed due to the Covid pandemic.

The ceremony will now be held at the memorial, which is behind the Windsor Hotel, on Tuesday, September 20.

The Aber Valley Heritage Group, which is behind the new plaque, said: “We are so pleased that the previous deteriorated Windsor Colliery Memorial has been re-designed and replaced.

“This would not have been possible without the generosity and financial support from the miners and their families, who worked or had connections with the Windsor Colliery along with Caerphilly County Borough Council, Aber Valley Community Council, the Coal Industry Social and Welfare Organisation and other Community Groups of the Aber Valley, to all of whom we are incredibly thankful.”

The event starts at 1.30pm, but attendees are asked to arrive no later than 1.15pm.

Car parking is available at Senghenydd Rugby Club, with a park and ride minibus transporting people with walking difficulties.

Refreshments will be available at the rugby club after the event.

At around 3pm on the day, there will be a showing of the 1967 film The Masters Singers, which shows scenes from Windsor Colliery.
