Lee Prescott will run the Cardiff Half Marathon in full uniform

A Caerphilly firefighter will be running the Cardiff Half Marathon this weekend – wearing full uniform weighing around 45lbs – the equivalent of 20 litres of water.

Lee Prescott, who will be running the 13-mile race on Sunday, October 2, said: “It’s obviously an insulated suit so it does get quite hot – so I’m hoping for a cool day. Once the breathing apparatus is on the back, it weighs about 40 or 50 lbs.”

Lee is taking on the challenge in aid of Motor Neurone Disease Association – and has already exceeded his fundraising target of £800.

The charity is one close to Lee’s heart. A family friend, Patrick Wharton, from Bristol, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease just before his 40th birthday.

What is motor neurone disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is an uncommon condition that affects the brain and nerves. It causes weakness that gets worse over time.

There’s no cure for MND, but there are treatments to help reduce the impact it has on a person’s daily life. Some people live with the condition for many years.

MND can significantly shorten life expectancy and, unfortunately, eventually leads to death.

Lee said: “Patrick can no longer talk and is having a really tough time. It’s a horrible disease.

“I’ve raised about £1,300 so far, which will help provide support and research as there is currently no cure – and it can happen to anyone at any age.”

On the start line, Lee will be joined by his son, Jack.

Lee said: “He surprised me on Father’s Day and said he’d entered so he could run with me. It will be his first big event.”

It is the second time the Cardiff Half Marathon has been held this year, with the postponed race from 2020 having been held in March.
