New trains are coming to the Rhymney line
Train services are set to be disrupted by strike action

Rail services are set to face further disruption over the coming weeks due to strike action.

Members of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) will be striking on December 13 and 14, as well as on the 16th and 17th.

Further strikes are set to go ahead between December 24 and 27, as well as into 2023, with action planned for January 3, 4, 6 and 7.

RMT is in a dispute with Network Rail, not Transport for Wales (TfW). However, as Network Rail controls the signals along the Rhymney line, TfW services would be impacted by strike action.

Jan Chaudhry-Van der Velde, TfW’s chief operations officer, said it was “vital” that passengers check for the latest information before travelling.

He continued: “We are continuing to advise people to only travel by rail on strike days if they have checked on journey planners first.

“Despite not being involved in the strikes, only around 10% of our services will be running and the majority of the Wales and Borders network will have no services at all.”

What services will be affected?

December 13, 14, 16 and 17 and January 3, 4, 6 and 7: Majority of TfW services will be cancelled. However, an hourly service between Cardiff and Rhymney will run.

Services from Cardiff to Newport, Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil will also run hourly, but services along the Ebbw Valley line will be cancelled.

Meanwhile, a full timetable will operate on December 15 and January 5, but services will start later than normal.

December 24 to 27: Services will finish earlier than normal on Christmas Eve and start later than usual on December 27. No services will run on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
