Vandals have damaged Christmas trees in Aberbargoed and Blackwood (pictured)

Aberbargoed’s Christmas trees will not be lit up again this year due to anti-social behaviour, according to Bargoed Town Council.

There are two Christmas trees in Aberbargoed, including one outside St Peter’s Church which will not be illuminated again.

The tree outside of St Peter’s Church, which was seen as a ‘symbol of hope for the community’ was vandalised earlier in December with the electric connection broken, star atop the tree almost destroyed and securing ropes burnt.

Other acts of vandalism have also taken place in the Bargoed and Aberbargoed area with a Christmas tree outside the community centre on the Park estate damaged, winter barrels in Bargoed town centre taken and Christmas craftwork on a post box also stolen.

In response to the ‘significant damage’, Bargoed Town Council said in a Facebook post:

“Unfortunately as a result of anti-social behaviour in the form of vandalism both Christmas trees in Aberbargoed have been significantly damaged and will not be illuminated again this year.

“Town Council Members will be considering options for next year as this is a significant cost to the community.”

Anti-social behaviour has been reported in other areas of Caerphilly County Borough too, with the £300 Christmas tree in Blackwood damaged after being up for just two weeks.
