The Governor of the Bank of England visited Caerphilly last week to speak with pupils at St Cenydd Comprehensive School.

During his visit, Andrew Bailey gave a speech to 100 pupils, who went on to take part in an interactive session and quiz him on a variety of topics, such as his career in finance, cryptocurrency and how the Bank of England is tackling inflation.

After this, Mr Bailey spoke with pupils in the school’s Enterprise Club, who were keen to discuss their business propositions for a sustainable mobile technology business.

Following the visit, Mr Bailey said he was “impressed” by the pupils’ “very insightful questions on the economy”.

He added: “It was inspiring to meet such dedicated young people and hear their aspirations for the future.”

The school’s headteacher, Rebecca Collins, greeted Mr Bailey as he arrived at the school, alongside deputy headteacher Ceri Bown, head girl Katie Nash and head boy Kyle Parson.

Miss Collins said: “It was an honour to welcome the Governor of the Bank of England to St Cenydd School. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to discuss and further understand important economic matters that impact upon their lives now and in the future.”

Also attending the visit were Ian Derrick and Steeve Hicks from the Bank of England Agency for Wales, as well as Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for finance, Cllr Eluned Stenner.

Cllr Eluned Stenner said: “In these challenging times, it was wonderful to see the students so engaged in their Q&A session and to be given the opportunity to hear directly from Mr Bailey on matters affecting the economy.”
